Artist Critique #1 - Martha Rosler

Invasion, Martha Rosler 2008

Artist Martha Rosler is known for her work using various forms of media, but her photomontages caught my eye the most. Much of her imagery revolves around wars, particularly Vietnam and more recently Iraq. In her piece Invasion, we see what appears to be a war zone in the middle east with a tank coming down the road on the right side. Surrounding it are multiple men dressed in suits who look like they could be runway models or as though they have been cut out of magazine ads. They are walking in the same direction as the tank and their formal dress brings to mind not only affluence and high fashion but also corporate America and perhaps even the idea that our country's greed is what brought us to the middle east in the first place. Although our presence in Iraq is shrouded with good intent, Rosler's image brings doubt into the picture and calls into question the true intent of war.
