Reading #1

When put into different contexts, a photo's meaning can be drastically warped from what the photographer's original intent may have been. I think it is somewhat of an inherent quality for us to invent narratives and make as much meaning out of a photograph as possible, and when surrounded by leading content, we're motivated to do so and anything paired with the image in question will guide our imaginations.

I was particularly interested in the part of the reading that discussed the viewer's alienation with the subject when looking at a photograph in the setting of a museum or from an artistic perspective--that even the most gruesome or heart-wrenching of subject matter can be almost meaningless when put in a situation where it is no longer about the content of the image. The article quotes Rosler in saying "[the pictures] become studies in the possibilities of photography."
